What is Vertcoin?

Vertcoin is not funded nor controlled by any entity, it is simply an open source GPU Bitcoin variant that mirrors BTC development.

Vertcoin uses an ASIC-resistant proof-of-work mechanism to issue new coins which allows consumer grade hardware such as GPUs more incentive to secure the network and validate transactions.

It can be mined profitably by anyone, and its distribution is fair, without a premine, ICO, or airdrop. Vertcoin is developed by volunteers from the community and funded solely by donations.

Vertcoin

January 8th In 2014 Vertcoin was launched as an open-source cryptocurrency. It uses a decentralized approach to mining using modern graphics cards. Rewards are given out to miners to secure the network and ensure the accuracy of transactions. The Vertcoin blockchain is maintained by a coalition of miners using their graphics cards. This ensures Vertcoin is an ASIC resistant coin that does not focus on one particular mining company or device.

Vertcoin is an open-source GPU Bitcoin alternative that doesn’t receive funding or direction from any entity. You can mine Vertcoin with your home computer exactly the way Bitcoin was intended to be mined.

Vertcoin can be mined profitably by anyone, and its distribution is fair, without a premine, ICO, or airdrop. Vertcoin is developed by volunteers from the community and funded solely by donations.

Like gold, Vertcoin is a finite resource that protects your money from vested interests and ensures that transaction fees are proportional and shared among many miners. With Vertcoin, you can be your own bank.

The Vertcoin algorithm is designed to prevent the creation of custom mining hardware and multipool mining, ensuring that transactions are validated by a widely distributed network and preventing large mining pools from flooding the market with newly mined coins and causing selling pressure.

Our developers are committed to taking whatever steps are necessary to protect Vertcoin from specialized mining equipment and ensure that it can always be mined using consumer-grade hardware. This is good news for miners, as it allows them to compete fairly with each other and avoid the risk of being scammed by hardware manufacturers who may fail to deliver pre-ordered equipment.

What is Verthash?

Shortly, Verthash is an upcoming new mining algorithm that will put GPUs back on top for mining Vertcoin once again.

Verthash is the name of the mining algorithm for Vertcoin. Vertcoin successfully forked to Verthash 30 january 2021 and replaced Lyra2REv3, which is mostly being mined by either ASICs or FPGAs with GPUs being majored out-competed.
Verthash takes after Ethash (Daggerhasimoto) in that it makes hashrate scale in line with how fast the gpu memory is. Since GPUs, ASICs, and FPGAs already use the fastest memory available on the market, and all use the same memory, it means all device classes will have about the same potential hashrate… with no advantage for ASICs or FPGAs.

Vertcoin is built using Bitcoin as a base, receiving any future Bitcoin updates upon specification release confirmation.

Vertcoin was one of the first coins to lock in and activate SegWit. It was activated May 7, 2017

Vertcoin has the same block time (2.5 mins) as Litecoin and same supply of coins (84,000,000 coins).

These changes are well within scaling limits of blockchain growth and orphan generation (>1:30)

Verthash is Vertcoin’s mining algorithm which is similar to Ethereum’s Ethash (Verthash), meaning GPUs mine competitively.

This ensures maximum distribution of hashrate (security). It is done via IO bound memory constraints. Verthash is the most advanced mining algorithm to date.

Difficulty adjustment occurs every block (~2.5 minutes) as opposed to Bitcoin (~2 weeks).

Kimoto Gravity Well is the algorithm used and is necessary as a smaller hashrate coin.

The History of Vertcoin

Vertcoin was founded all the way back in 2014, and have accomplished quite a few things in those years. Below you can see how Vertcoin has expanded over the years.

Vertcoin suffered from 51% attacks

December 1, 2019

On 1 December 2019 603 blocks were removed from the VTC main chain and replaced by 553 attacker blocks. We note that 600 blocks is the current confirmation requirement for VTC on Bittrex. There were 5 double-spent outputs in which ~ 125 VTC (~$29) was redirected. Source – Vertcoin (VTC) was 51% attacked

In response, Vertcoin changed its POW algorithm to Lyra2REv3 and later once more, this time switching to Verthash Algorithm in order to bring VertCoin back in the hands of GPU miners.
